Quranic-Arabic Intensive – What is this course about?

  • The primary aim of the course it to enable students who have no Arabic background to understand the Qur’an directly in the Arabic language.
  • In order to achieve this, the course will equip the student with a foundation in Arabic grammar and morphology which will be used to undertake a word-by-word study of the Qur’an, its major concepts as well as its grammatical analysis.
  • A strong emphasis is placed on the holistic development of the student including addressing spiritual, academic and social needs of the individual and community.
  • The course is based on a tried and tested methodology which has seen more than 2000 students participate (full-time and part-time) with the ability to understand large portions of the Quran.  These students have been from diverse backgrounds and ages – ranging from high school children to grandparents.

* This is not a Quran recitation class

Is this course for me?

  • the desire to understand the Quran directly in the Arabic but have no Arabic background?
  • the basic ability to read the Quran even with difficulty?
  • the commitment to attend lessons on Sundays from 8:30am to 12:00pm?
  • the perseverance to dedicate 2 hours of revision time per week at home?
  • Would like a learning environment that is comfortable fun and uplifting? (students are never singled out to answer questions)
  • Do you have access to whatsapp, email and the internet (about 150mb per month)?

If you answered “yes” to the questions above then this course is for you! This is your opportunity to join hundreds of students from teens to grandparents have undertaken this journey. Course is open to males and females!

Its been so long since I studied anything – will I cope? am I too old?

Alhamdullilah we currently have students ranging from early teens to those in their 80’s who have joined this course! The course caters for those who have not studied for many years and we understand that you may be nervous.

Students are never singled out in class. Class assessments are minimal and those who prefer not to write are welcome to do so.

Lessons are fun and our objective is to make the journey of Arabic an enjoyable one for everyone!

If you would like to have a practical idea about the course before registering you are welcome to sit in during the current first year class on Sunday anytime between 8:30am and 12pm. Please contact us to confirm if you would like to visit the class.

What is the difference between the two courses offered?

At Mizan Institute we offer two primary courses:

  1. Course 1: Quranic-Arabic Intensive (a 2-year part-time course aimed at complete Arabic language beginners providing comprehensive set of tools to understand the Quran directly in the Arabic language as well as covering the oft-recited surahs of the Quran!)
  2. Course 2: Quran-in-depth Course (a 3-year part-time programme aimed at students who have completed the two-year Quranic-Arabic Intensive. This 3-year programme contains a complete coverage of the Quran, word by word, verse by verse.)

The two courses combined would require 5 years of part-time study resulting in a full coverage of the Quran, aimed at enabling a student to understand the Quran directly in the Arabic language! This is truly a journey that every believer should undertake – striving to read, understand, feel and live the Divine guidance!

What are the prerequisites for the course?

No prior knowledge of Arabic is required. The course is aimed at complete beginners. However, students are required to have a basic ability to read the Quran even with some difficulty although students will never be asked to read in class.

Students also need to have the commitment to revise the work covered every week as well as complete the homework exercises. This will require about 2 hours of revision every week.

What support is offered to students who miss class or struggle to keep up with the class?

Presentation of Classes
  • The course will be presented on MSPowerPoint. Each lesson will be reinforced with numerous examples and exercises to ensure the student gains mastery of the concepts before moving on to the next one. This will also include homework tutorials.
  • Lessons are interactive, fun and spiritually uplifting with both group and individual learning.
  • Students are never singled out for questions and assessments are optional. The learning environment is comfortable and relaxed.
Technology to aid learning – a “blended-learning approach”
  • Classes are audio live-streamed along with the accompanying presentations enabling students to follow the class remotely if required
  • All class audio along with presentation and study materials is uploaded every week to enable students to catch-up on missed lessons or review class material
  • Lesson material is emailed to students weekly along with homework reminders
  • Concept videos are sent to students to prepare before class or review work covered – this frees up more time for interaction in class
  • Student questions can be asked in person or via whatsapp during classes – allows those who prefer not to speak publicly in class to still engage with the teacher
  • In 2018 we will also be video live streaming and video recording the first year class. This will be made available to students on a weekly basis.
Academic Support
  • Tutors are available during group exercises to assist students with individual questions
  • Private tutors can be booked at a nominal cost for both Quran reading tutorials and Arabic language learning. This is done through an online booking service where we we try to match your requested times and venue with an available tutor
  • Questions can be sent via email and whatsapp between classes

What does 'Mizan' mean?

Mizan (pronounced mee zaan) means balance, equity and justice. Mizan is the balance within the creation of the cosmos, the balance within our existence and it represents the scales that determine our eternal destiny.

We believe that the principle of the balanced way is essential in a world that is increasingly out of balance. Just as this harmonious balance is evident in the natural world, this mizan needs to be cultivated within each one of us.

The Mizan Mission

Our aim is to educate, inspire and show the absolute relevance of the Islamic message by extending the traditional text into the contemporary context. We believe that Islam presents a panoramic vision and we aspire to develop our students holistically in keeping with this vision.
Mizan offers a number of activities outside of the classroom including spiritual retreats, evenings of remembrance and prayer and an annual i’tikaaf programme.
